The Spear Employment Initiative is a free course which helps 16-24 year old people who are not in education, training or employment. The six-week course has seen over 2,500 people graduate from its course over the past ten years – and three quarters of them have remained in education or employment. It has grown from one class of five people in West London to a scheme running in eight locations across the capital and working with 750 people a year.
In collaboration with big companies like Marks and Spencer, John Lewis and Accenture, Spear identifies and tackles the behavioural issues which employers find as barriers to work. Practical support is also given, such as CV writing and interview practice. All graduates from the course finish with a City & Guilds Level 1 Qualification in Customer Service, and many achieve placements with the corporate partners where they are provided with continued support for 90 days.
