Since 2003, high street cobbler Timpson has been making special efforts to employ ex-offenders in its shops. In the decade between then and now, Timpson has set up five workshops in prisons across the UK, where prisoners can learn skills such as shoe repairs, key cutting and engraving. All trainees who pass the skills test are guaranteed a job in a Timpson shop after they are released.
Sixteen of Timpson’s shops are now managed by former prisoners, and 90% of the prisoners who have joined have remained with Timpson for more than a year. Out of nearly 300 people who have joined the programme, only seven are known to have reoffended as of 2012.
