For thousands of people, employment is made difficult because of their spouse’s occupation – being a member of the military. The traditionally unstable nature of military families, who often move location, prevents many well-qualified people (mainly women) from gaining meaningful, secure employment.
In 2012, Heledd Kendrick – a military spouse herself – founded Recruit for Spouses, a recruitment agency for military spouses which also seeks to and change opinions in the business world. Recent changes to the military mean that families are more stable than ever before, but many businesses are not aware of this.
The social enterprise has helped hundreds of spouses into work since its founding and has also launched a Military Spouses Business and Employment Charter, which is awarded to businesses making efforts to help military spouses into work and business.
