Volunteer It Yourself

viyVolunteer It Yourself (VIY) combines volunteering and the development of skills for work for young people. It does this by challenging 14-17 year olds to learn building and construction skills on the job by committing to fix local youth club buildings in need of essential repairs.

VIY volunteers are mentored by professional tradespeople and gain vocational accreditations as well as access to further training, work placement and apprenticeship opportunities with local employers beyond the project.

VIY was successfully piloted with two club buildings in south London in 2011 and is now being rolled out in 47 locations across the UK over two years, starting in July 2012, involving up to 2,000 young people and 200 trade skills mentors.

The national roll-out of VIY is supported and enabled in partnership by London Youth, The Big Lottery Fund, Wickes, City & Guilds and the Co-Sponsorship Agency.
